A Shining Star Through Academic Sponsorship
James : A Shining Star Through Academic Sponsorship
In August 2022, destiny led me to meet a remarkable young man, James, in the heart of Nanyuki. James, just sixteen years old, approached me confidently as I strolled through my neighborhood, inquiring if I could offer him a job as a gardener. He knew where I lived, and his motivation was crystal clear – he wanted to contribute to his family’s well-being. With schools closed for the holiday season, he had some spare time and a strong desire to make a difference.
I felt compelled to engage with James. However, my principles were unwavering – child labor was not an option, as it is illegal and morally unacceptable. Instead, I proposed a meeting with his mother to explore ways in which I could extend a helping hand.
A few days later, James arrived with his mother, bearing the weight of her family’s struggles. She narrated her journey as a single mother, raising five children after being forced to leave her home in western Kenya in 2009. Life led her to Nanyuki, where she sought employment as a domestic house helper, all the while holding the dream of providing her children with a better life. She initially moved back to her parents’ home, but their ailing health prompted her to relocate her family to be by their side.
James, aware of his mother’s sacrifices, was actively seeking employment to supplement her income. Her job alone could not cover all their basic needs, especially considering James’s impending transition to high school.
At the time, James was in class eight, on the brink of sitting for the crucial Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations scheduled for November that year. Our organization, Bright Day Kenya, was on the lookout for deserving students to sponsor for their high school education. I encouraged James to share his KCPE results once they were released by the Ministry of Education.
When the results came in, James had scored a commendable 298 marks out of 500. His hard work and determination paid off, earning him a place at St. Augustine Sirima Secondary School in Laikipia County. After a meticulous vetting process and ensuring he met all the scholarship requirements, we were proud to extend an academic scholarship that would support his high school journey for four years.
Today, James stands as a beacon of hope and resilience. He is excelling in his academic pursuits and has emerged as a leader among his peers, recently earning the prestigious title of class prefect.
As the Board Treasurer of Bright Day Kenya, I witness the transformative power of education and sponsorship. James’s story embodies the profound impact that compassionate donors can make in the lives of promising young individuals like him. We invite you to join us in creating more success stories and brighter futures through your support.
